Freshers Day Celebration

It was our duty to officially welcome our dearest juniors to our institution. We planned well and organised a welcome party for them. It was a well organised function. We really enjoyed each moment. Due to Covid, there was certain limitations, but we managed to make the function a grand success. The programme beginned with official meeting. Principal Dr. Preetha TL, Rev. Fr. Sony Sebastian, Vice Chairperson, Ladies representatives gave a wonderful speech as well as invited all of our freshers to join our Christ Nagar family. After that with the comparing of Parvathy and Nibin, we organised the unofficial welcome which was fun-filled and colourful. We are happy that, they are very energetic enthusiastic students who participated well in every small tasks given by us.

VENTEL Initiative - First step

As per the guidance provided by VENTEL initiative, our college divided us into various groups and asked us to choose convenient topics for vocational programme. Based on that, our group choose "Mask Making" and "Pickle production".

We performed both these tasks individually and to inform the authority, we prepared two video of both mask making and pickle making. It was a nice experience for all of us.

SYNOPSIS


TITLE OF THE STUDY

 “Critical analysis of 8th standard coursebook of Kerala syllabus”

 

INTRODUCTION

Education is essential in the present world to provide us a better living. An education system consists of both material as well as human resources. Important human resources are teachers and students. One of the most important material resources is text books. It is the major tool in the hands of teachers as well as the students. So a coursebook for each standard should be appropriate and it should help the students to improve their knowledge in that subject. That is why this research focuses on critically analysing the Part I, 8th standard coursebook in Kerala syllabus.

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In our education system teachers and students are essential parts. For every teacher as well as students a proper guidance and support is essential. Coursebook is considered as an effective tool for both of them. They support and guide students to a limit to learn more about the subject through lessons, exercises, morals, etc. So while constructing coursebook, the qualities should be ensured. This study helps to have an insight into the qualities of English coursebook.

The study is entitled as “Critical Analysis of 8th standard coursebook of Kerala syllabus”

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The study has following objectives

·                     To identify the qualities of a good English coursebook.

·                     To critically analyse, whether the Part 1 English coursebook of 8th standard possess the qualities of a good English coursebook.

 

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

·                     Whether the 8th standard coursebook enhances English language learning?

·                     Whether English coursebook of 8th standard satisfy qualities of a good English coursebook?

 

METHODOLOGY

Method: Document Research Method

Tool: Rating Scale

 

STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES USED

In this study, the researcher identified seven criteria and categorised the components inside each criteria. Based on ‘Science coursebook rating system’ created by Collette and Chiappetta, the researcher has created a self prepared tool to critically analyse an English coursebook. Then each component was rated from one to five points, based on its presence in the coursebook. The score of each component was calculated in each sessions to receive a partial score and then to evaluate the coursebook as a whole.

 

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY

The major findings of the study are:-

·  When all the rated scores for each component are calculated, the coursebook scored 242 out of 290, 

·  The results of the present study revealed that, the part I coursebook of 8th standard is ‘Good’ according to the rating scale.

·  The coursebook has various good qualities of an English coursebook, but still need more improvement in various aspects.

· The results revealed that, when the criteria are analysed the most perfect score, 96% was assigned on illustrations of the coursebook.

· The results revealed that, the exercises scored only 72.85%, which needs be improved.

· The study helped to find that, the part I coursebook of 8th standard include all the major seven criteria and the categories inside them. But many of them need improvements to become an excellent English coursebook.
